A FENCE

A fence sits in silence, snow lies patiently.
A way to restrict, control, keep in , and keep out.
A way to protect and separate portions of earth.
Us vs. them, stay in, keep out, sing sweet don’t shout!
It is as if this fence cries out, “how can I restrict the flow of water and air?

It is as if this fence laughs at our folly.
It is as if this fence knows more than we know.
Its space between beams smiles with an open assurance that despite what we think, and despite what we intend,
its only goal is to sit quietly, with an occasional creak that breaks the silence
of its simple pleasure of just being there.
